This course focuses on the application of God's Old Testament revelation to the hearts of teenage Christians. The basis of study is the broad sweep of Old Testament history and thought, with an emphasis on the Messianic promise. Correlated with this survey are units of study on personal Bible study, identity, worship, and friendship.  These units are intended to help the student transfer Biblical insight to practical Christian living.

This course covers an introduction to the Bible, the intertestamental times and Apocrypha, as well as a study of the life of Christ. The emphasis is on understanding and applying the life and teachings of Jesus.

Proclaiming Christianity (0124) 10 (Required) .5
This course uses the text of the book of Acts and the 13 epistles of St. Paul to understand the Christian faith of the early church as it became established in this world. Using the message which guided the life and actions of 1st Century Christians, comparisons and applications are made for the challenges facing 21st Century Christians as they seek to carry out Christ’s command to be His witnesses.

This course provides a review of doctrine, a survey of church history, a discussion of problems the young Christian faces, and an overview of worship, stewardship and evangelism. This course emphasizes living your Christian faith.

Teenage Evangelism (0140) 12 .25

This senior communications course reviews basic witness skills including: one-liners, S.A.L.T., and witness to a sinning friend. It reviews witness tools for the unchurched including T.A.S. (Talk About The Savior) and the Great Exchange. It introduces the student to the Friend-to-Friend process for problem solving and explores modern witnessing techniques including telemarketing the faith. The course requires the investment of several hours off campus in real-life witness situations. Participants master the presentation of the faith in school, and then share the faith as representatives of the WELS and WLHS with people off-campus. Course participants will experience a new confidence and be better prepared to give an answer to those who ask about the hope they have in Jesus Christ.

Biblical Archaeology (0142) 12 .25

This elective course features a study of the Bible in the light of archaeological discoveries. Attention is given to such buried cities as Ur, Jericho, Nineveh and Babylon, as well as to many ancient objects and writings which relate to biblical history. In addition to building up one's faith, this course provides much information for defending the truthfulness and reliability of the historical statements of the Bible.

From Friendship to Marriage (0144) 12 .25
This elective course will seek to develop skills and attitudes that will develop and deepen relationships and will help to prepare you for marriage. Among the topics explored will be communication skills, differences between the sexes and their roles, changes in relationships, what makes a good spouse, and how love expresses itself (romance, sex, and waiting). This team-taught course will promote student participation.

Christian Life Planning (0146) 12 .25

This elective course is intended to be a capstone to the high school student's spiritual training. Students will consider who they are in Jesus and the impact that this has on their future plans. The course also includes a Christ-centered look at Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Church Art and Architecture (0148) 12 .25

This elective course offers a survey of our art heritage in building forms and art forms used in Christian churches from the time of the early Christians to the present. Symbolism techniques, such as stained glass, mosaics, and carvings are studied along with styles of architecture.

Church Music (0151) 12 .25

This elective course provides a critical examination of music in the Christian church and the process by which music is selected for worship. It includes a survey of the historical background of the liturgy, hymnody, the organ, and the choir, as well as developing trends in contemporary church music. Listening to recorded examples of church music, performance of hymnody, evaluations by students, and an "organ crawl" to area churches broaden the student's ability to understand the role and scope of church music.

A Comparison of Christian Churches (0152) 12 .25
This elective course provides a study of the teachings and practices of various Christian churches and an opportunity to evaluate these churches in the light of God's inerrant Word. Special emphasis is given to Roman Catholic theology, the various Lutheran Synods and the Evangelical Movement in America today. Students explore the influence of liberal theology on the various branches of Christianity as well as the impact of current trends in Christianity today.

This elective course gives an opportunity to see how the great Apostle Paul dealt with many of the problems of the church at Corinth, problems which still trouble us in our churches and personal lives today.

Luther (0156) 12 .25
We honor, but seldom read or hear, the works of Martin Luther. This elective allows the student to judge Luther on the basis of his own words. The class examines Luther's view on Charismatics and Catholics. The class visits and interviews members of both of these religious groups as it determines what Luther would say to them today. Class discussion is emphasized. The student will gain a new perspective on our unique doctrinal position as Lutherans.

To prepare students to witness to the world, this elective course focuses on the teachings of the major religions of the world: Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Additionally, the students will explore other threats to faith including postmodernism, cults, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the New Age Movement.

Pasos y Puentes - Gospel
Outreach in Spanish (0159)

This course is designed to be the spiritual capstone of a student's study of Spanish language and culture. We will begin with a study of cross-cultural ministry in general, then quickly move into an overview of the religious climate in Latin America with an emphasis on the influence of Roman Catholicism. We will spend the majority of our time acquiring tools for outreach in Spanish, including memorization of key Bible passages and a simple Law-Gospel presentation. We will conclude our quarter with an enriching study of Christian Worship in Spanish, and we will examine familiar Bible stories from a Spanish VBS or Sunday School curriculum This class is designed for the student who has a strong desire to share his/her faith with  a Spanish-speaking soul.

The scientific community imposes many of its beliefs upon the Christian. This elective course points out the proper distinction between science and religion and gives the Christian some guidance when dealing with issues such as evolution, genetic engineering, abortion, astrology, New Age, etc.

Revelation (0161) 12 .25
Revelation, one of God's greatest courage and comfort books of the Bible, is explored in all its beauty and mystery in this elective course. John presents an overview of the entire New Testament age in the context of a monumental struggle between the Lamb and the Dragon with his beasts. No one can leave the study of this book without being affected by John's inspired look behind the curtain.

Sunday School Teachers (0163) 12 .25
Recognizing the importance of teaching children the truths of God, students enrolled in this course will have the opportunity to develop skills and gain an appreciation for teaching children in a Sunday School setting. We will learn and practice the parts of an effective Sunday School lesson, study the qualifications of a Sunday School teacher, and learn about the characteristics of children at various ages. We will use written materials, audiovisual presentations, teacher and student lesson demonstrations, and actual classroom observations. For those students considering a career (ministry) in teaching, this class will also provide an opportunity to explore the basic elements of teaching.
