Exploratory Drafting/Graphic Communication (0840) 9,10,11,12 .5
This one-semester course, which is open to all students, explores the areas of mechanical drafting and graphic communication. In this exploratory class, students will receive one quarter of instruction in the basics of computer aided drafting (CAD) using AutoCAD. During the other quarter students will be introduced to the basics of graphic design and desktop publishing.

Mechanical Drafting 2 (0802) 10,11,12 .5

This one-semester course is designed for students who are interested in career fields ranging from woodworking and metalworking to mechanical design and engineering. The student will learn the required skills to draw and understand basic mechanical and architectural drawings. Drafting problems will be solved which will train the student in visualization skills, abstract thinking and problem solving. Computer-Aided-Drafting (CAD) software will be used extensively - both 2-D AutoCAD and 3-D Solidworks.
Pre-req: Exploratory Mechanical Drafting or consent of instructor for seniors planning a career in engineering.

Mechanical Drafting 3 (0803) 10,11,12 .5
This one-semester course extends the student's exposure to drafting problems in a variety of applications. CAD will also continue to be used extensively.

Advanced Mechanical Drafting (0804) 11,12 .5 or 1

This one - or two - semester course is for students who have successfully completed Mechanical Drafting 3 and wish to add to their drafting skills and understanding. The class is recommended for students who plan to continue their training at a technical school, as well as for those who will enter a college engineering program. The CAD programs of AutoCAD and Solidworks are used extensively. Five college credits are available at MATC to students who earn a "B" or higher in this class - "Introduction to AutoCAD": 2 credits, and "Technical Drafting 1": 3 credits.

Architectural Drafting 1-2 (0808) 11,12 .5 or 1

*Note: This one- or two-semester course is open to juniors and seniors who have completed Exp. Drafting, Housing and Interior Design, or the exploratory art courses of Drawing/Sketching or Mixed Media. The first semester emphasizes architectural drafting practices and techniques. The second semester focuses on architectural design and ends in the planning and design of a single family home. Students are introduced to Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD).
Pre-req: Exploratory Mechanical Drafting, Housing and Interior Design, or the exploratory art courses of Drawing/Sketching or Mixed Media

Advanced Architectural Drafting (0810) 12 .5 or 1

This one- or two-semester course is for students who have successfully completed Architectural Drafting 2 and wish to add to their drafting skills and understanding. Students do extensive drafting on the computer (CAD). The class is recommended for students who plan to continue their training at a technical school as well as those who will enter a college architectural or architectural engineering program.

Graphic Communication 2 (0842) 10,11,12 .5
Graphic Communication 2 is a one-semester course offered to students who have successfully completed Exploratory Graphic Communication and who are interested in exploring graphic design and desktop publishing as a potential career. Students will use their artistic talents to create graphic design projects using Adobe PageMaker, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

Graphic Communication 3 (0843) 10,11,12 .5
This one-semester course is offered to students who have successfully completed Graphic Communication 2. Students will incorporate digital photography and scanned images into Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in a variety of challenging graphic design projects. Students with creative ability and who wish to pursue a career in graphic design will benefit from this course.

Advanced Graphic Communication (0844) 11,12 .5 or 1
This one- or two-semester course is for students who have successfully completed Graph. Comm. 3 and who show a definite desire, interest, and aptitude for printing. Students are assigned actual printing jobs within the high school and in the community at large. This course is designed for students who plan to pursue printing as a career and wish to continue their education at a technical school upon graduation.

Exploratory Shop: Wood/Metals (0820) 9,10,11,12 .5

This one-semester class is open to all students and is designed to give both boys and girls an opportunity to explore their interests in working with wood and metal. Students will learn fundamental skills and machine operation in each subject area. Primary emphasis is given to helping students determine their interest and God-given abilities in each of these manufacturing areas.

Wood 2 (0822) 10,11,12 .5
This one-semester course is for those who have completed the exploratory wood course, and is designed to give students an introduction to machine woodworking. Areas of focus are machine operation, safety, and project construction. Computer-Aided-Machining is also introduced. Proper design, planning, and processing of wood and plastic materials are emphasized. Students considering a career in wood-related industries - furniture manufacturing, cabinet and millwork, etc. - will benefit from this class.

Wood 3 (0823) 10,11,12 .5

This one-semester course extends the skills and knowledge learned in Wood 2. The vocational fields of laminate and solid surface fabrication, finishing, and furniture-related construction processes are introduced and highlighted. The student also continues to progress in the use of the computer-aided equipment - router and lathe. The course concludes with mass-production processing using a team approach. Students considering a career in wood-related industries - furniture manufacturing, laminate fabrication, cabinet and mill work, etc. - will benefit from this class.

Construction Skills (0825) 11,12 .5

This one-semester course exposes a student to a variety of careers in the construction field. Through a number of hands-on experiences, students explore fields such as masonry, carpentry, and house wiring. A major part of the class is the construction of a shed or small cabin.Pre-req: Wood 2 or approval of the instructor

Advanced Wood (0826) 11,12 1

This one-year advanced course is designed for the serious woodworking student who is planning on an apprenticeship program or technical school enrollment after high school. The student develops increased competence in planning and building more difficult projects. Advanced wood finishing techniques are learned and applied. Further Computer-Aided-Machining is also emphasized. Typical projects chosen and made by the students are gun cabinets, tables, clocks, entertainment centers, etc.

Metals 2 (0862) 10,11,12 .5
This one-semester course is for students who have completed the Exploratory Metals class. The course is designed to build on interests and skills in the metal working trades. Students will work on projects in machining, sheet metal, welding and foundry.

Metals 3 (0863) 10,11,12 .5
This one-semester course is open to those students who have successfully completed Metals 2. Exploratory Mech. Drafting is strongly recommended. New technologies in metal working and plastics are emphasized.

Advanced Metals (0864) 11,12 .5 or 1
This one- or two-semester course is open to students who have successfully completed Metals 3 and Exploratory Mechanical Drafting. Students will further their skills in Metal working and design by solving a variety of problems related to manufacturing. Students who plan a career in engineering or metals technology would benefit from this course.

Small Engines (0881) 11,12 .5
This one-semester course is designed to introduce the student to understanding the operation of small gasoline engines, 2 and 4 cycle. Repair, troubleshooting, maintenance, and safety in operation are covered. Students disassemble and reassemble several small engines.

Cooperative Industrial Education 12 1 or 2
This one-or two-semester course is open to Trade and Technical Education or Family and Consumer Education students who have successfully completed appropriate course work in their department as determined by the co-op coordinator. Work experience is provided through a local business that will train students in a variety of skills. Students interested in this course are required to submit an application (available in the Guidance Office) to the coordinator, Mr. Haakenson.
