Athletics

Harvey Kuenn is fondly remembered by classmates as one of baseball’s unsung heroes. While attending LHS he was a three sport athlete, and he still holds the record in football for the longest field goal of 52 yards. His professional career achievements began in 1952 when he signed with the Detroit Tigers. He was selected as the 1953 "Rookie of the Year" for the American League. In 1959 he was the league’s batting champion with a .353 average. He played 1,833 career league games and had 2,092 career hits. Harvey began managing the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971. They became known as "Harvey’s Wallbangers," and in 1982 he led them to an American League Championship for the first time in franchise history. The Brewers named their top hitting award after Harvey Kuenn in tribute to his athletic excellence.
