Joan Prince
Class of 1971
Alumni
Dr. Joan Prince became
the first African-American to graduate from the bachelor’s program
in Medical Technology and the master’s program in Clinical
Laboratory Sciences at the University of Wisconsin in
Milwaukee. At UWM she earned a Ph.D. in Urban Education with a
specialty in medical science education. Joan is one of only twelve
people nationwide certified in the specialized area of flow
cytometry; one of only twenty non-physician members of the American
Society of Hematology; and one of three Americans on an
international team of eight involved in establishing two health care
clinics in West Africa. She is a Vice Chancellor at UWM, a Clinical
Associate Professor, and a published author. Joan serves on many
local, regional, and national community and foundation boards,
including appointments from Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and
Wisconsin Chief Justice Shirley Abrahmson. She has received numerous
local and national awards. Wisconsin Lutheran High School honors Dr.
Joan Prince for her prestigious
achievements
and humanitarian endeavors.
