Guidance/Counseling Center

Students may face a number of situations in which they will want or need encouragement or help. They have an advisor who will help with their personal and/or academic situations or refer them to someone who will be better able to provide what they need. Students will be with their homeroom advisor each day. Guidance team leaders, two personal counselors, and the Director of Guidance and Counseling are also here to assist students.

Course Change Fee
A
significant amount of time, effort, and cost has been done by students, advisors, and the guidance staff in selecting and scheduling appropriate courses for each student at WLHS. They have carefully considered WLHS graduation requirements, post-secondary school admission requirements, and career goals for each student. Parents have given written approval to their students’ choices. As a result, these selections are taken seriously and changes are strongly discouraged.

There may occasionally be a legitimate reason to change a student’s course selections after they have been approved.

However, before any schedule change can be approved, the student must demonstrate that the proposed change will produce a significant educational improvement. A Course Change Request form must be submitted prior to July 31. These forms are available in the Guidance Office. Any such request must be accompanied by a $10.00 processing fee, whether granted or denied.

If a student is requesting to change teachers, a letter written to Principal Goede must be attached to the Course Change Request form, providing the reason for the request. After July 31, a $20.00 processing fee must accompany the request.

No courses may be changed or added after the fifth day of any class. Any class dropped after the fifth day will receive a grade of "F" and no credit awarded.

Class schedules are given out at the beginning of each semester.  A $1 fee will be charged to replace lost copies of class schedules.

Parent Conferences

Parents are encouraged to contact the school when they have concerns. Parent-teacher conferences are held for all students after the first quarter. Conferences are arranged at other times by appointment if requested by individual parents or teachers.

Returning Students

Course Selections: Students will select their courses in consultation with their parents/guardians and a guidance team leader.
Registration: Registration forms are mailed to a student's home.

Study Periods

There are three types of study halls: l) regular study hall; 2) the Extended Learning Center or Resource Center; or 3) Student Commons (cafeteria). Regular study halls are for traditional quiet study. Study is done on an individual basis or in group situations with the instructor’s permission.

Upon student or parent request, a student may be assigned to the Extended Learning Center in Room 219, or the Resource Center in Room 220. The purpose of these centers is to promote better study habits and/or provide tutorial help in various subject areas.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are academically eligible will be assigned to Commons, located in the cafeteria. These students are automatically assigned to Commons unless parents request otherwise. The atmosphere in Commons should be such that students may study, socialize, or just enjoy a more relaxed setting. Refreshments are available but must be kept in the Commons area. All types of card games and card playing is not allowed. Students abusing their Commons privileges through inappropriate behavior will lose this privilege and be reassigned to a regular study hall. Students are expected to bring their study materials and writing utensils with them to all types of study halls. All rules that pertain to normal classroom conduct also govern study hall behavior.
