Vikings Roll to Regional Title

A sterling defensive effort and an especially efficient performance on offense helped the Vikings to their second straight WIAA Regional Championship with a 71-39 win over Whitefish Bay on Saturday night.

Wisco made their first four shots and scored the game's first 13 points to force a Blue Dukes timeout when the game was barely two minutes old. The visitors chipped away and eventually cut the lead to five points. But the Vikings closed the first half on a 15-3 run to take a 38-18 advantage into the locker room.

Bay got a layup and a pair of free throws right out of the break to cut into the lead. But Prentice Young scored the game's next five points - part of a 10-point effort in the second half - to right the ship. The Vikings turned the ball over just one time in the second half - on their final possession - and were content to work for good shots without rushing the action. On the other end, the Wisco defense did not offer the Blue Dukes any openings, forcing them into lengthy possessions that often came up empty. The result was 71 Wisco points on just 48 offensive possessions, while Bay was held to just 34 points before both teams emptied their benches.

Jordan Glenn used a perfect 9-9 performance from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 16 points. Prentice Young shot 6-7 from the field and finished with 14 points; he added five rebounds, a pair of steals, and a team-high three assists. Kon Knueppel scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Jamiir Allen added nine points and two steals. The Vikings shot 54% and committed just five turnovers, while holding Whitefish Bay to 35% from the field and forcing 14 miscues. A box score is available here.

With the victory, the Vikings advance to the sectional semifinal. They will square off with Wauwatosa West on Thursday, March 10. The game will be played at the neutral site of Whitefish Bay High School and is scheduled to tip at 7:00 PM.
