Ash Wednesday Service & Imposition of Ashes at Nain Lutheran Church

Nain Evangelical Lutheran Church (1665 S. 57th Street, West Allis) was founded in 1914. They have over 180 members. Nain's partnership with Wisco includes the various choral and musical groups of Wisco assisting in worship services.

Next week, on Ash Wednesday, February 26, Christian churches around the world will mark the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. Nain Lutheran Church will hold their "Imposition of Ashes" Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 p.m.
An explanation of the "Imposition of Ashes" rite is as follows:
  • The purpose of this custom is to proclaim God’s law, reminding us of our need for Jesus’ redeeming grace since sin brings death and our bodies will turn to dust. The ashes placed on the worshiper in the shape of the cross also remind us that because of Christ and his death, our guilt has been removed.
  • Participation in this rite is voluntary; worshipers will not be required or expected to take part. Observing this custom or not doing so does not make one’s repentance more real, nor one’s faith more sincere. In matters where God has neither commanded nor forbidden something in Scripture, we enjoy the Christian freedom – having been liberated by Jesus’ blood shed for us – to make certain God pleasing decisions in life and express our saving faith in various ways.
  • Those who wish to receive ashes will be ushered up to the chancel single file where Pastor will use ashes to draw a cross on their forehead (or the back of their hand) while saying, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). After receiving the ashes, participants will walk back to their pew.
