2023 WELS National Conference on Lutheran Leadership

More than 1,300 WELS members gathered in Chicago for the 2023 WELS National Conference on Lutheran Leadership. For three days in January they dedicated themselves to learning about leading in the congregation and community as well as enjoying worship and fellowship. Rev. Dr. Phil Huebner, WLHS campus pastor, took 16 WLHS students along to participate in a WELS teens panel discussion. Dr. Joan Prince ('71) and Rev. Dr. Kenneth Fisher, president of WLHS, led a presentation titled “A Courageous Conversation on Modeling Gospel-Centered Unity.” Click here for a recap of the conference.
Dr. Prince and Rev. Dr. Fisher kicked-off the conference with their keynote presentation. Acknowledging the lack of diversity across WELS, they reminded attendees not to let man-made constructs be a barrier to sharing God’s love; we are all citizens of a greater kingdom. As Fisher explained, the unbelieving world will see God’s love through the actions of believers. Prince spoke about how there are many ideas for unity in the world, but none of them work without the gospel.

WLHS students who were a part of the panel discussion "An Honest Conversation with WELS Teens" with Rev. Dr. Huebner, greatly enjoyed the experience. It was encouraging to attend the event and meet about 60 other youths, as well as having their ideas listened and discussed.

Rev. Dr. Huebner also  led a breakout session on "Who Am I?" - The Crisis Among Teens Today. The pressures, challenges, and real-life problems that teens experience today could not have been foreseen by previous generations. The presentation offered real life counseling suggestions to those who work with, teach, pastor, or lead teens.

The conference was for all WELS members, both called workers and laypeople, men and women of all ages, and current leaders and future leaders. For more information visit the web site at www.lutheranleadership.com or the WELS Vimeo site here for video breakouts.
