Get to know the HPs (House Parents) of Zion House, John and Katie Cleven, a bit better . . .
Why did you choose to become an HP?
"We both enjoy working with kids. Additionally, we were excited to learn about another culture, while sharing our own culture and faith with others."
What is one thing that makes your house unique?
"John shares a love of video gmaes with the boys so everyone (HPs included) get involved in game nights a few times each semester."
What is the greatest joy of HPing?
"Forming amazing relationships with the boys."
What is the greatest challenge of HPing?
"Anytime we have to hand out a punishment."
What do you do in your free time?
"Katie loves to run, bike and swim. She often competes in races and triathalons on the weekends. John enjoys strumming his guitar and playing video games."
What is your favorite movie?
"Lilo and Stitch (Katie) and Finding Forester (John)."
What do you do when your kids are at school?
"John works full time at Barnes and Noble as a manager while Katie works as a therapist while finishing up her doctoral program in Clinical Psychology."
What Bible verse or story has become clear and meaningful to you as a HP?
"'Pray continuously" (1 Thessalonians 5:16). Being with the kids has really changed and improved our prayer life. Because we are a big part of both their earthly and spiritual life, we try to be guided by God in all of the decisions we make for the boys and with them, instead of praying just in times of trouble or joy, we are truly praying continuously."
