Social Studies

  • African American Studies

    This elective course examines the history and culture of Africa and the African-American experience in an interdisciplinary format, including an analysis of the unique historical, cultural, and social developments from the Middle Passage to the present day. The course will address the literary and artistic contributions of African-Americans to American culture. Critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral presentation skills are emphasized.

  • American Government

    This elective course begins with the formation of our American democracy and follows it as it has evolved to today. Studies include the U.S. Constitution, the three branches of government and their significance, and a general study of all the pertinent facts involving our democratic government.

  • AP Microeconomics/AP Macroeconomics

    AP Microeconomics/AP Macroeconomics is a fast-paced college-level course that focuses on the decision making of individuals, businesses, and the government. This year-long course will cover both microeconomics and macroeconomics. Micro focuses on the supply and demand for products, the labor markets, and the role competition plays in a free market system. Macro focuses on the economy as a whole, including economic measures, economic growth, fiscal policy, monetary policy, and international economics. This class will prepare students for college and potentially allow a student to earn 6 university credits upon passing both AP exams.

  • AP Psychology

    AP Psychology is a full year, elective course for seniors. It provides students with an understanding of psychology as a developing field of study; insight concerning human development, thought, and behavior; and appropriate applications in the modern life of Christians . Students who complete the course have the option of taking the Advanced Placement exam in Psychology.

  • AP US History

    AP U.S. History is a full year elective course designed for the highly-motivated and academically gifted student. It involves an in-depth study of United States history, providing opportunity for research, writing, and discussions about history. This fulfills the WLHS graduation requirement in place of U.S. History. Students in this course may choose to take the Advanced Placement exam in U.S. History at the conclusion of the year.

  • Economics

    This elective course helps students in many ways, especially in their calling as Christian stewards, and as individuals, members of their communities, and global citizens. Students will learn about economic systems and business organizations, market structures, financial markets, and government influences on our economy. The focus is on practical answers to questions like “Why does gas cost so much?” and “How can the government just create money?”

  • The World Since 1945

    The World Since 1945 is a one-semester elective course designed to give students the opportunity to study the history of the western and non-western world since World War II. It also gives students the opportunity to study current world affairs such as the nuclear age and the Cold War, the Pacific Rim and modern China, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Islamic fundamentalism and to anticipate potential future events. This is a core course.

  • US History

    Students study the history of their country from the Age of Discovery to the present, covering the following major themes: Colonial period, Revolutionary War, the Constitution, early years of the Republic, sectionalism and the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age (industrialization, immigration, and urbanization in the late 19th century), the emergence of America as a world power, World War I, the Roaring 20s and Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War and post cold war era, including foreign policy and the domestic scene.

  • World Geography

    This elective course studies the world in terms of location, place, regions, human-environment interaction, and movement. The course overviews the physical and cultural geography of the world to enable students to better understand world cultures.

  • World History: Ancient

    Students study the early history of the world, including early Egypt and the first civilizations of Africa, Asia, India, and China. Students learn about ancient Greece and Rome and early Christianity. The course concludes with a study of the Byzantine Empire.

  • World History: Medieval

    Students study the rise of Europe and the Muslim world, covering the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Reformation, the ages of Absolutism and Enlightenment, and the Global Age. Students learn about the French Revolution and Napoleon.

  • World History: Modern

    This course focuses on the twentieth century. Major events include World War One, the Russian Revolution, World War Two, and the Cold War. Students study industrialism, global nationalism, and revolutions. A significant portion of the course is non-western history; areas of study include Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America prior to World War Two.
