Every year WLHS makes revisions to the parent and student handbook. We draw attention to some of the updates in our attendance policy for the 2022-23 school year:
ATTENDANCE – COURSE CREDIT POLICY Regular attendance is considered to be essential for the earning of credit at the high school level. Course credit will be forfeited on the 16th absence to 1st period of a semester course or on the 14th absence to any semester course which meets during class periods 2-8. Course credit will be forfeited for any quarter course when the student reaches 8 absences during that quarter. These would include all absences recorded as a part of the student’s attendance record (excused, family vacations, unexcused, and truant). These would not include absences for school related activities. A full-time student is enrolled in a minimum of seven units per year. When, because of lack of attendance, a student has lost credit in one-half of those units, that student will be dropped from enrollment.
ATTENDANCE – DETENTIONS The following procedures will be enforced when working with a student who has violated attendance policies:
A student will serve an after school detention for each of the first seven (7) attendance related offenses (excessive tardies or any unexcused absences) in a quarter.
If a student receives an eighth (8) attendance related offense in a quarter, the student will be placed on Probation.
If the student receives 3 attendance related occurrences while on probation, they will be dropped from enrollment.
If a student is put on probation for any two (2) of the four (4) quarters in a school year, the student will be dropped from enrollment.
If a student misses a detention, a second detention will be added. If a student misses two (2) detentions in a quarter the student will be suspended from school for a day. If a student misses three (3) or more detentions in a quarter, the student will be at risk of being dropped from enrollment.
ATTENDANCE–TARDINESS It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time for all classes. If a student enters a class after the tone has sounded, the student is tardy.
Any student who arrives tardy to school MUST check in immediately at the Attendance Office. Teachers are not to accept tardy students to first hour class without a Late Arrival Slip. Tardies to first hour (7:45-8:00 a.m.) cannot be excused by a parent.
A student will be assigned a detention after the sixth tardy and each subsequent tardy to their first period class in that same quarter.
A student will be assigned a detention after the third tardy to periods 2-8, as well as a detention for each subsequent tardy in that same quarter.
All tardies beyond 10 minutes for periods 2-8 will be marked as unexcused absences.
