Canticum Novum, a WELS Chamber Choir made up of singers from around the country, will present free concerts June 23-25. Derived from Psalm 96:1, “canticum novum” is Latin for “new song”, and we are proud to acknowledge a number of WLHS connections. Faculty member Casey Pufahl serves as their executive director and choir members include Anne (Steeves) Hafenstein ('11), Jessi (Floeter) Kolberg ('01), Evan Witz ('11), and Levi Nagel ('99). Concert performances are Friday, June 23, 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waukesha, Saturday, June 24, 7:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Downtown Milwaukee, and Sunday, June 25, 10:30 a.m. at Morning Star Lutheran Church in Jackson. Friday's performance at Trinity, Waukesha will be livestreamed at canticumnovumwels.org.
This year’s program, entitled “The Everlasting Light,” is centered around the poignant words of Isaiah 60:19: “The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.” Featured in the program is Johannes Brahms’ thought-provoking motet, Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen, as well as Randall Thompson’s The Peaceable Kingdom, a dramatic cycle based on Edward Hicks’ painting of the same name. Also included are pieces by leading modern composers Dan Forrest, David von Kampen, Elaine Hagenberg, and Kyle Pederson.
