Softball Holds on Late to Top Greenfield

The Lady Viking softball team erupted early and held on late to notch their second win of the year, a 9-7 triumph at Greenfield. Sam Thompson's big day at the plate led the team and gave support to pitcher Melissa Tonn, who earned her first victory of the season.

After the Hawks tallied twice in the bottom of the first, the Vikings answered by batting around in a six-run top of the second. Tonn helped her own cause with an RBI single to left and Thompson drove in two of her team-high four runs with a single to right. Wisco took advantage of a Greenfield error - one of three miscues by the hosts - to add a run in the fifth, and Thompson extended the lead in the sixth with a two-run home run to center. That extra margin proved critical as the Hawks rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth and cut the margin to 9-7. But Tonn and the defense set them down in order in the seventh to send the Vikings to their second victory of the week.

Thompson led the Viking hitters with a 3-for-3 day at the plate that also included a walk. Tonn and Evah Pinnow each collected two hits and an RBI, and Leah Pinnow added the other Wisco RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the second. Tonn struck out three and gave up four earned runs to earn the win in a complete-game effort.
