Vikings Win Battle of Conference Champions

The Wisco basketball team closed out the regular season with an 87-83 overtime victory over Milwaukee Lutheran on Thursday night. The Woodland Conference crossover game pitted the champions of the East and West divisions of the league.

The Vikings jumped out to a double-digit lead on the strength of a defense that held the Red Knights to just 29% shooting in the first half. But the visitors battled back and led by as many as six points after halftime before the advantaged seesawed back and forth over the final few minutes. Prentice Young's runner in the lane with just under 30 seconds remaining knotted the game at 75, and the Wisco defense kept Milwaukee Lutheran from scoring on their final possession and sent the game to overtime.

In the extra period, the Vikings trailed by three before free throws from Jordan Glenn and Young put them on top for good at 80-79. Two minutes later, Young connected on one of two free throws to put Wisco up 85-83 with 17.9 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Young blocked the Red Knight shot, gathered the rebound, and then hit both free throws with four seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Glenn led all scorers with a career-high 27 points to go along with seven rebounds. Young totaled 19 points and added seven rebounds and seven assists. Tyrese England scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds, and Jonah Rindfleisch grabbed a team-high 10 boards and handed out three assists.
