Forensic Scientists

Forensic science applies knowledge from biology, chemistry and physics to investigations. Thanks to popular shows like CSI and Criminal Minds, this field is high profile. While our AP Biology students are not working on crime scenes, they are learning about analyzing DNA, a person’s unique genetic blueprint, through a technique known as gel electrophoresis which separates DNA fragments revealing their one-of-a-kind composition (pictured). In the process students also practice their micropipette (an eyedropper that makes tiny drops) skills. Thanks to a grant from the Plautz Fund, we have the equipment, a MiniOne Electrophoresis System, to launch these budding forensic scientists.
