Crusaders Stop Vikings in Regionals

The Viking baseball team found itself locked in a pitchers' duel with Catholic Memorial in Tuesday's regional semifinal. Unfortunately for Wisco, they managed just two hits and gave the Crusaders some help by committing four errors and came out on the short end, 3-1.

After trading goose eggs for the first two innings, both teams broke through in the 3rd. Memorial put two men on via a dropped third strike and a walk. The next batter singled to left, and a Wisco error on the play allowed both runs to score. Another single and error in the ensuing at bat allowed a third run to score and the Vikings found themselves down 3-0.

Eddie Rynders led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored when Tyler Danko's ground ball was thrown away by the shortstop. That error also moved Danko into scoring position at second base, and the Vikings looked to have a big inning developing. But the next two batters struck out to end the threat. Mason Ruh and Danko (in relief) kept the Crusaders off the board the rest of the way, but Wisco was not able to get any more runs across. They put runners on first and second with nobody out in the 7th, but a pickoff, a fielder's choice, and a strikeout, ended the inning, the game, and the season.

Ruh struck out 9 and gave up no earned runs over 5.2 innings in his final game in a Wisco uniform. Fellow senior Danko worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. The Vikings finished at 13-12 in a wild season that saw them win 10 consecutive games after a 2-9 start.
