Comeback Comes up Just Short at Port

Despite a daunting third-quarter deficit, the Wisco football team refused to quit in Friday's Level 1 playoff game at Port Washington. The Vikings came all the way back to claim a 19-18 lead after trailing 18-3. But a late score put the Pirates back on top and a last-gasp drive by Wisco came up just short, and they fell by a score of 26-19.

Micah Koschnitzke got the Vikings on the board with a 32-yard field goal, the only score for either team in a very fast first quarter. Port found the end zone twice before halftime and once again in the third quarter; however, the point-after conversions failed each time, giving Wisco a window.

Sean Minor got the Vikings back in the game with an 80-yard TD burst down the middle. Zach Tipton ran the conversion in to cut the lead to 18-11. The defense forced a stop, but the next Wisco drive ended in the red zone. However, the defense rose to the occasion again and forced another punt, and this time the Vikings capitalized. Tipton connected with Brendan Lane for a long gain to set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Kamarion Burbridge. Tipton followed that up with another successful 2-point conversion run and the Vikings led 19-18 with just 5:51 to play.

However, the host Pirates had the answer. They marched down the field and took back the lead with an 8-yard TD run. Their first successful conversion attempt of the night put them on top 26-19 with just 2:00 left to play. Needing a touchdown, the Vikings put together a drive but were unable to score before time expired.

Minor finished with a game-high 112 rushing yards, followed by Burbridge with 108. Tipton ran for 34 yards and passed for 57. A box score is available here. The Vikings' season ends with an official record of 6-4.
