Vikings Advance With Lopsided Win

The Wisco basketball team advanced to the regional finals with a 78-45 win over visiting Shorewood on Friday night. A strong defense set the tone in the Vikings' 23rd win of the season.

Transition baskets off of steals in the early going helped Wisco to a 17-2 lead in the first six minutes. That was followed by a cold stretch which allowed Shorewood to creep closer. The Greyhounds narrowed the lead to 28-20 late in the first half. But Wisco closed the half on a 12-0 run over the final 3:08, then opened the second half on a 19-2 run. The result was a 59-22 lead with just over 10 minutes to play, and it was academic from there.

Jamiir Allen led all scorers with 22 points. He added three steals and six deflections as part of an excellent team defensive effort. Prentice Young added 11 points. Kon Knueppel scored six points, had six rebounds, and handed out a team-high five assists. Brendan Lane provided a spark off the bench with six points, four steals, and three assists, and Alex Hernandez scored four points and took a pair of charges. The Vikings forced 27 turnovers on the night, 17 of which came on steals. They held Shorewood to 39% shooting and owned a 14-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

A box score is available here. The Vikings will host the regional final at 6:00 PM on Saturday, March 5.
