Shorthanded Vikings Win Season Opener

Despite competing with only ten - and sometimes nine - players, the Wisco girls soccer team won its season opener, 3-2 over Heritage Christian on a frigid afternoon at WLHS.

Spring break pared down the Vikings' roster and injuries both before and during the match limited the availability of those who were present. Still, Wisco struck first when Mia Butler scored in the fourth minute to put them up 1-0.

The Patriots answered midway through the half, and took the lead late in the first half during an 11-on-9 sequence. That lead held until late in the second half, when Madelynn Festerling (one of several Vikings limited by injury in the first half) scored twice in the final 13 minutes to give Wisco the victory.

Mara Matus and Madison Vasatko each had an assist. Aubrey Bauer and Avery Knoll had four saves apiece. The team hopes to be at full strength when they travel to University School on April 5.
