Vuntivity @ 4th Grade Calligraphy

Bella Chen (a talented junior from Hangzhou, China) tells about a volunteer activity (vuntivity) last week where the students in Our Funky Family taught over 400 fourth graders how to write Chinese calligraphy . . .

"For the grade school visit, we as part of our Funky Family prepared red papers, and sketch papers for students to experience Chinese culture by writing Chinese Calligraphy. And their assignment is to learn how to use Chinese brush and black ink to write “God so loved the world”.

As a Chinese student, I believe this fun experience is not only one way to show the magnitude of Chinese culture but also for students to feel God’s love in a unique perspective. In the short two hours, I felt the kindness and innocent of the children. Moreover, I even heard the kid saying, “It looks easy, but it’s actually really hard.” Their hard working was the motive for me to do a better teaching job. Their little hands gently hold the brush and they followed us steps by steps. I told them “It’s like when you are doing sketching, there are vertical lines, horizontal lines, also squares.” I could feel their enthusiastic eyes focusing on us in order to not miss any parts.

When they finished the last word, they could not hide their happiness. The last but not least, our biggest gain was their joyful face."
