Funtivity @ Passover Party

Lilian Guo (a sophomore from Beijing, China) tells about the amazing opportunity we had on Maundy Thursday to celebrate a traditional Passover meal together . . .

"The day before Jesus died he celebrated the Passover with his disciples. Passover was the most important holiday in Israel. Just like Spring Festival is the biggest holiday in my home country, China. We in the Funky Family were very honored to have Dr. Lawrenz, the former professor and president of Asia Lutheran Seminary and Old Testament scholar, lead us in a traditional Passover meal. The party was on Maundy Thursday, so we wanted to experience and learn about the last meal Jesus had two thousand years ago.

Dr. Lawrenz was dressed like an Old Testament Rabbi with a white robe and sandals. He greeted us in Hebrew at the door and we were very curious what we would learn on this Maundy Thursday. We sat at tables that were like a Hebrew family with a father, mother, wise child, naughty child and shy child. Everything in the Passover meal had a meaning to remind the Hebrews of God’s grace in Egypt. And as we ate the meal in 2017 AD, we can see that all elements of the meal pointed to our Passover Lamb:  Jesus.

There too many little and intersting things that happened in that meal, but one part moved me deeply when the Israelite children would their fathers, “Do we worship God because He destroyed Egypt with the Ten Plagues?” And the father would reply, “No, God loves Egyptians too. There is no one sinless in this world.” No matter what era we live in God’s grace and goodness will never change!

After our delicious and educational meal we went into the auditorium to sing some karaoke. It was a pretty unforgettable Passover party!"
