2017-2018 School Theme - Here I Stand

In 16th century Germany, a young Augustinian monk named Martin Luther had drawn the ire of his church of that day. Well educated and natively intelligent, Luther dared to challenge his church’s teaching. Not surprisingly, the church pushed back. Hard. A dramatic scene took place in 1520 at the Diet of Worms where the church and the government asked Luther to take back what he had written and preached. He refused. Often the words “Here I Stand” are attributed to him in this moment though that is not verifiable. What is true is that Luther knew he stood on the solid ground of faith, grace, and Scripture alone.
By God’s grace we stand there too some 500 years later. A confessional Lutheran church and school rightly commemorates the Reformation Luther led and so follows our theme for the year. Yet we are not just observing an anniversary or a historic event. We are recognizing that “Here I Stand” upon faith, grace, and Scripture is the bedrock of the Lutheran Confessions, and is as relevant and important today as it was five centuries ago. Should God let the world stand another 500 years, may it be our confession then. To pass on such a confession is the purpose of Christian education.
