Six WLHS math students recently attended an Actuarial Science Career Day hosted by Northwestern Mutual and Milliman. The event gave students an inside look at a profession that blends mathematics, statistics, and business to assess risk and guide financial decision-making. Through interactive workshops and conversations with professional actuaries, students learned about career paths, college preparation, and the growing demand for professionals in the field.
WLHS has long supported students interested in actuarial science through rigorous coursework such as AP Calculus AB/BC and Calculus II and III. This year, opportunities expanded with the addition of an actuarial course through WLC. Calculus II students may take Theory of Interest, an online course that prepares them for the Financial Mathematics (FM) exam. One student, Ethan Gottschalk ('26), is currently enrolled and plans to take his first actuarial exam this summer.
Experiences like this connect classroom learning to real-world applications and help students discover and develop their God-given gifts for future careers.
