My First Thanksgiving: Perspectives from International Students

International students at Wisconsin Lutheran High School had the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with local host families this year, giving them a meaningful look into American culture and traditions. For many of our students, it was their very first Thanksgiving celebration.
The Short-Term Homestay Program connects dormitory students with caring families in the WLHS network who open their homes for the long holiday weekend. Students enjoy a home-cooked meal, family activities, and a chance to experience everyday American life outside of school.

Upon their return to the dorm, students were surveyed about their experience. Here are a few insights of what the students enjoyed about their experience:

- "Being able to experience a new tradition with people I trust and love."
- "Playing with their little kid and the Thanksgiving party."
- "They took me to Chicago."
-  "I cut down a Christmas tree in order to decorate it."
- "How I was integrated in all the activities like if I was a member of the family."
- "Every part that I spent time with them."

Students said the weekend helped them feel more connected, supported, and confident as they continue their year at WLHS. Many shared that being included in a family tradition made them feel at home even while far away from their own families.

The Thanksgiving homestay program is just one of the many ways WLHS supports international students by providing connections to local families and classic cultural experiences. We are grateful for the host families who opened their homes and hearts, and we look forward to offering this opportunity again over Christmas break!
