From Shanghai to WLHS to the University of Illinois, Class of 2025 alum Terry recently visited and reflected on what made his WLHS experience a life-changing one.
Terry, who is currently studying accounting with interests in business and data-related fields, took advantage of his winter break at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to visit his high school alma mater in Milwaukee. Originally from Shanghai, China, Terry attended WLHS for three years, from sophomore through senior year. He also participated in the school's inaugural English Excellence Summer Camp in 2019.
A Teacher Who Made an Impact
When asked which teacher influenced him most, Terry immediately named Mr. Moldenhauer, who teaches Ancient History and AP US History.
“He is very passionate. He really cares about teaching and takes his job seriously. We also connected through basketball, so we became friends.”
Life Beyond the Classroom
Terry was involved in several extracurricular activities, including:
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
Tech Team
Trap Shooting
Wisco Pilot (the student newspaper)
Trap shooting was especially meaningful to him. Terry explained that part of the joy came from discovering something he was good at, which made the experience even more rewarding.
Friendships That Last
Terry remains in touch with both international and American classmates. “About half and half. Some friends I talk about basketball with, some about investing, some about tech. I still feel connected to many people.” He credits WLHS with helping him build relationships around shared interests.
Advice for Chinese Students
Terry believes Chinese students would be most surprised by the wide variety of clubs and opportunities available at WLHS. “There are many clubs. You can really explore what you like.”
When asked what advice he would give future Chinese students considering WLHS, Terry emphasized balance. “Focus on being well-rounded. Grades are not the only important thing. Hobbies, activities, and joy matter, too. Be willing to look for change. Be open to it.” He encourages students to look for happiness, not just achievement.
Looking Back
Looking back, Terry describes his time at WLHS as life-changing. He believes his experiences studying at Wisconsin Lutheran High School unlocked something special within him. “This is a place that really changed me. I feel like I learned what life is really about. I feel like I learned how to make my life happy here.”
