Vikings Bounce Back With Win at BC

A night after dropping their first game of the season to D2 #2 Pewaukee, the Vikings responded with a fantastic finish to claim a victory over D1 #5 Brookfield Central.

After trailing for much of the first half, Wisco pushed ahead briefly midway through the second half. But they found themselves trailing 59-51 when the Lancers scored with 4:09 remaining. It would be the final basket the Vikings would allow.

Kon Knueppel's three-pointer trimmed the margin to five with 2:47 to play. After a steal by Prentice Young and a basket by Landon Key, the deficit stood at just three with 2:19 remaining. A blocked shot by Jonah Rindfleisch ended the next Central possession, and when Key found Young in transition for a basket, the Vikings trailed by just one.

After a timeout, Young came up with the last of his team-high three steals and converted the basket on the other end to put Wisco up 60-59 with just over a minute to play. The Vikings forced a missed shot on the other end; Young was fouled and made one of two free throws with 18 seconds left to put the team up 61-59. With one more stop needed, Key came up with a crucial steal. He was fouled with 5.8 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to seal the win.

The Vikings won despite shooting just 35% on the strength of an outstanding rebounding effort. They racked up a 46-31 advantage on the glass, including 19-3 on the offensive boards. Rindfleisch led the rebounding charge with 14 boards to go along with 12 points and five blocks. Key paced the team with 14 points, and Young added 13 points, four assists, and three steals.

More stats are available here. The Vikings travel to Arrowhead on Tuesday, January 19.
