Vikings Top Lions in Thrilling Season Opener

The Wisco football team raced out to a 21-0 advantage over New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday night, only to watch the Lions score three unanswered touchdowns to tie the game in the third quarter. But a clutch TD catch by Akeem Allen gave the Vikings the lead with just under two minutes to play and a strip sack by Micah Koschnitzke sealed the 27-21 Wisco win at Raabe Stadium.

The Vikings opened the scoring in a big way when Zach Tipton connected with Sean Minor on a 47-yard TD catch midway through the first quarter. Kamarion Burbridge extended the lead when he rumbled for a 28-yard rushing score late in the period, and the senior added another score to start the second quarter, breaking free from 56 yards away to make it 21-0 Wisco.

But the Vikings would watch the Lions score once before halftime and then twice more in the span of 53 seconds in the third quarter to knot the game at 21 and set the stage for a tense final act. Neither team could break through in the fourth quarter until Tipton found Allen for a juggling 27-yard TD catch with 1:58 remaining. The extra point failed but Wisco led 27-21. With the Lions on one final march, Koschnitzke came up with a strip sack on fourth down to nail down the season-opening win for Wisco.

Burbridge finished with a game-high 142 rushing yards on 13 carries. Minor caught four passes for 62 yards and Tipton threw for 98 yards and a pair of TDs. A box score for the game can be found here. The Vikings travel to Waukesha North on Friday, August 27.
