Crusaders Edge Vikings in High-Scoring Affair

The Vikings and Racine Lutheran lit up the Raabe Stadium scoreboard on Friday night, but costly turnovers and a scoreless final quarter meant that Wisco came up just short, falling to the Crusaders 41-34. This game was played to take the place of the Shorewood game that was forfeited to the Vikings earlier in the week.

The Crusaders opened the scoring by scooping up the first of what would be three lost fumbles by the Vikings and taking it all the way back for an 81-yard touchdown. Two touchdown runs by Zach Tipton put Wisco back on top. After Racine Lutheran answered to tie the game at 14, the Vikings opened the second half scoring by claiming a defensive score of their own. Miles Hall picked off a pass and took it back 49 yards to put his team back up by a touchdown at 21-14.

The teams traded scores in a wild third quarter. The Crusaders answered Hall's TD with one of their own. Tipton converted a 48-yard scoring pass to Will Hotchkiss, followed by another Racine Lutheran TD. Tipton would rush in from 9 yards out for his third score of the night to end the period with Wisco up 34-27. But after the offensive outburst, the Vikings would not score again. The Crusaders put up 14 unanswered points in the final quarter to claim the 41-34 victory.

Tipton enjoyed his most productive game of the season. He rushed for 139 yards and 3 TDs while passing for 129 yards and a TD. Kamarion Burbridge added 152 yards on the ground, as the Vikings outrushed the Crusaders 412-267. But the visitors enjoyed air superiority (218-129), and four costly turnovers (three fumbles and an interception) hurt the team's efforts.

A box score is available here. The Vikings travel to Grafton on Friday, September 10.
