#1 Vikings Top #2 Pirates in Double Overtime

In the best game of the 2021-22 season to date, the Vikings overcame an 11-point second half deficit and survived a pair of overtimes to emerge with a 101-99 win at second-ranked Pewaukee. Five players scored in double figures for Wisco to help the team eclipse the century mark for the second time this season.

The Pirates raced out to a 7-0 lead in the early going. But the Vikings reeled them in and forged ahead 15-12 on back-to-back three-pointers from Jordan Glenn. From there, things stayed tight until halftime. Pewaukee sank two free throws with five seconds left to send them into the locker room up 32-30.

After hitting just three from behind the arc in the first half, the Pirates connected on 8 of their first 11 three-pointers after halftime. They also took advantage of a string of Wisco turnovers and stretched their advantage to 63-52 with under 9 minutes remaining. However, a putback by Kon Knueppel and a pair of triples from Josh Knueppel (sandwiched around one from Jamiir Allen) helped pull the Vikings back into the game. An old-fashioned three-point play put Pewaukee up 82-75 with 2:42 to play. But Allen sank his second long distance shot of the night on the ensuing possession, then stole the Pirates' inbounds pass and laid it into cut the lead to 82-80. Pewaukee forged back ahead by five after another triple with 1:16 to play. But Kon Knueppel found Glenn behind the arc for another three; Knueppel then stole the ball on the following possession and found Glenn, who raced to the hoop and laid it in to tie the game at 85 with just 12 seconds left in regulation. The teams headed to overtime.

Landon Key's basket midway through the first overtime gave the Vikings their first lead since late in the first half at 89-87. After Pewaukee pulled ahead again late in the OT, Glenn scored again with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 93 with 33 seconds left. The Wisco defense held and sent the game to a second overtime.

On the second possession of the second overtime, Key connected from deep in the corner to put the Vikings up 96-93. But a pair of empty Wisco possessions gave the Pirates an opening and they took advantage, forging ahead 97-96 after a pair of free throws with 1:46 to play. But Kon Knueppel scored in the lane 20 seconds later to give Wisco a lead they would not relinquish. After Pewaukee missed a jumper, Knueppel rebounded and found Glenn in transition on the right wing. The senior rose up and hit his sixth triple of the night to put the Vikings up 101-97 with 50 seconds remaining. A basket from Pewaukee and two empty trips to the charity stripe for Wisco meant that one last defensive stand was needed. Josh Knueppel came through, defending in isolation at the top of the key and getting a hand on the Pirates' final three-point attempt. The shot came up short and the Vikings came away with a 101-99 victory.

Glenn led the team with a career-high 29 points and a game-high four steals, as Wisco forced the hosts into 15 turnover. Kon Knueppel registered a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds; he also added five assists. Josh Knueppel's season-high 16 points off the bench included a 4-6 performance from deep. Key scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. And Allen followed up a career-best performance against Kettle Moraine with 14 point, six assist effort, despite sitting much of the first half with foul trouble.
