Vikings Grind Out Road Victory

It wasn't always pretty, but the Viking basketball team survived an eight-minute scoring drought, a one-point halftime deficit, and six players in foul trouble to pull out a 72-63 win at New Berlin West on Friday night.

Wisco raced to a 16-3 lead to open the game. But after Jordan Glenn's transition basket four minutes in, they did not score again until Josh Knueppel connected from downtown with 6:03 remaining in the first half. Meanwhile, West ran off 16 unanswered points to get back into the game, and after a late three-point play, the hosts took a 35-34 lead into the locker room.

West stretched their advantage to 41-38 early in the second half. But a three-pointer from Jamiir Allen tied the game. One minute later, Allen connected again to put Wisco on top 44-41 and give them a lead they would not relinquish. A pair of triples from Kon Knueppel sandwiched around one from Glenn gave the Vikings some breathing room at 53-46, and a three and a putback from London Ashford helped give the team its biggest advantage of the second half at 60-48 with 8:41 to play. West would eventually trim the lead to four, but the Wisco defense held the hosts to just five points over the final 5:30 of the game and the offense did enough to seal the victory.

Allen led the team with 20 points on 7-11 shooting and added four steals. Kon Knueppel scored 15 points and grabbed seven boards. Glenn and Josh Knueppel added nine points apiece, while Alex Hernandez pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and MJ Townsend handed out a team-high five assists. The Vikings forced 20 turnovers and enjoyed a 14-6 advantage on the offensive glass, helping to offset a hot shooting night by West (57.5%).

More stats are available here. The Vikings travel to Pius XI on Tuesday night for a 7:00 PM game.
