Vikings Top Trojans, Advance to Sectional Final

The Wisco basketball team overcame a slow start with a dominating second-half defensive performance to defeat Wauwatosa West 76-59 at Whitefish Bay on Thursday night. The Vikings improved to 6-1 all-time in the sectional semifinal round and advanced to Saturday's sectional final with the win.

The Trojans used their size on the interior to score at the basket and bother Wisco defensively in the early going. They led 13-5 after five minutes of action. But after a timeout, the Vikings found their footing. Landon Key scored all eight of his points in a 25-6 run that swung the game for good. He connected twice from behind the arc and once on a steal-and-score to help stake his team to a 30-19 lead that they would not relinquish. The Vikings took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

The Wisco defense put the clamps on in the second half. The Vikings held West to just seven points over the first 11 and a half minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the Wisco offense was red hot, ripping off 23 points in that same stretch to put the game away. Jordan Glenn's layup with three minutes to go put the Vikings up 72-45, at which point the team emptied the bench.

Kon Knueppel shot 8-10 from the floor to lead the Vikings with 20 points; he added 10 rebounds and four assists. Jamiir Allen was 3-4 from behind the arc as part of a 19-point, seven-rebound effort. And Prentice Young added 16 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Wisco shot 11-22 from deep, battled the bigger Trojans to a 33-33 stalemate on the boards, and forced 15 turnovers on the night. A box score is available here.

The Vikings advance to the sectional final, where they will face Pewaukee for the right to advance to state. The game will be played at 1 PM at New Berlin West. All tickets must be purchased online; a link to do so can be found here.
