Jazz Ensemble Awarded Exemplary Performance

After achieving first place at the district festival, our student-musicians performed at State on Saturday, April 30. This year, Wisco students earned four nominations at the state festival: Tommy Doerr ('25) (trombone solo), Nathaniel Frisque (tenor saxophone solo and alto saxophone solo), and the Jazz Ensemble.

From those nominations, WLHS band program was excited to announce that two Exemplary Performance Awards were presented from the Wisconsin School Music Association for Nathaniel Frisque (tenor saxophone solo) and the Jazz Ensemble — the first time an ensemble from the high school has received this honor in recorded school history.
The Solo & Ensemble Festival involves approximately 100,000 students throughout the state of Wisconsin each year. The best performances of the most difficult music earn a trip to the state festival. This year there were almost 10,000 events at the state festival that featured 32,000 students.

Compared to other state high schools, our student-musicians are one of the few ensembles that practice as a co-curricular and not as a class during the day. With this award, WLHS Jazz Ensemble is considered a top performing jazz ensemble in the State.
