Softball Grabs Share of Conference Lead

The Viking softball team avenged its only Woodland West loss of the season and moved into a tie atop the conference standings with a 3-2 win over New Berlin West on Thursday afternoon at WLC. The team ran its record to 15-3 overall with the victory.

As in the teams' first meeting, runs were at a premium. West struck first in the opening inning, plating a runner on a passed ball with two outs. Emily Buch had the answer, taking a 1-1 pitch deep to left in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the game at one run apiece. Both pitchers kept the opposing offenses in check until the bottom of the 5th. Katie Meyer drew a leadoff walk. After two outs were made, back-to-back singles from Kylie Bilitz and Sofia Schroeder loaded the bases for Sydney Vitangcol. The freshman came through, lining a double to center to score two runs and give Wisco a 3-1 advantage. West would get one run back in the 6th, but Vitangcol set down the side in order in the 7th to preserve the win.

Besides her crucial double, Vitangcol also starred in the circle, going the distance while striking out 17 and allowing just five hits and no walks. Both runs charged against her were unearned.

Wisco's conference record now stands at 10-1. They can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win over West Allis Central in the regular season finale on May 18. Prior to that, the Vikings host Brown Deer in a crossover game on May 16. Game time is set for 4:30 PM at the WLC Athletic Complex.
