Homecoming is a fun and memorable time for students, but it’s also an important opportunity for parents to think through what happens before — and especially after — the dance. A few proactive conversations can make a real difference.
If you are hosting students, know who is coming and going and make sure responsible adult supervision is truly present.
Do NOT arrange hotel rooms, Airbnbs, or other unsupervised gathering places for students before or after the dance.
Talk openly with your child about alcohol, smoking, vaping, drugs, sexual activity, and riding in cars with others. Group pressure can sometimes lead students into choices that no one in the group actually intended to make.
Stay aware of phones, social media, and group chats. Knowing what is being planned is an important part of staying connected to your child.
Don’t rely on phone location alone. A phone can stay in one place while a student goes somewhere else.
Give your child an exit plan. Make sure they know they can call you if they end up somewhere they shouldn’t be, feel uncomfortable, or simply need a safe ride home.
We know the vast majority of our parents are already having these conversations and setting thoughtful boundaries, and we are very grateful for that partnership. This reminder is not being shared because we believe students are “running wild,” but because being proactive matters.
Our hope is simple: that Homecoming is fun, memorable, and safe — and that a few intentional conversations beforehand help keep it that way.
