Gianna from South Korea

We are thrilled to highlight Gianna Lee, a bright, driven, and highly involved student from South Korea. Since arriving at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Gianna has made a remarkable impact across campus and in the dormitory. From her academic achievements to her active participation in music and student leadership opportunities, Gianna's high school journey is a testament to resilience, courage, and continuous personal growth.
Growing in confidence and independence

Adjusting to a new school and culture can be challenging, but Gianna has learned to approach unfamiliar experiences with an open mind. By stepping outside her comfort zone and trying new things, she has developed greater confidence and independence.

Reflecting on her growth, Gianna explains, “Having the courage to try new things definitely helped me grow as an independent person. Even if I don’t know what’s going to happen, I can confidently try things now. I feel more capable, and I handle things better.”

As she looks ahead to college, Gianna recognizes the value of the experiences she has gained at Wisco. “I won’t be 100% ready for college, but I will have the foundation I built at WLHS in classes, activities, and dorm life.”

Finding success in the classroom

Gianna has also demonstrated a strong commitment to academics, earning high grades while challenging herself with rigorous courses, including AP Psychology and calculus. Just as important as the coursework, however, has been the encouragement she has received from her teachers.

Gianna particularly appreciates teachers who take the time to understand and support their students. She credits Mr. Gottschalk with helping her become more comfortable speaking up and asking questions. “He is a good listener, and spent time trying to understand me, and helped me be more confident at asking questions.”  Her experience highlights the value of building relationships with teachers and developing the confidence to seek help when needed.

Sharing her passion for music

Music has been an important part of Gianna’s life from an early age. Growing up with a mother who teaches piano helped foster her love of music, which she has continued to develop through numerous opportunities at Wisco.

Gianna has participated in the band, percussion ensemble, and Viking Steel, as well as musical performances and church sing-outs. Among her favorite memories are the opportunities to practice and perform alongside fellow students.

“The concerts, church sing-outs, and plays are some of my favorite experiences,” she shares. “The process of practicing together to perform at different churches is so memorable and fun, and I love to see people enjoying our music.”  Through these experiences, Gianna has not only continued to pursue her musical interests but also formed connections with others and contributed to the broader Wisco community.

Advice for future international students

Having experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of studying in a new country, Gianna has some valuable advice for students considering an international education.

“Be ready to stand up for yourself and ask for help when you need it,” she encourages. “It’s an important lesson I learned, and it isn’t a bad thing at all.”

She has also learned that asking questions is a normal and important part of the learning process. “At Wisco, I see how normal it is for students to ask questions, and becoming comfortable with that made a huge difference in my success.”

Gianna’s journey illustrates how embracing new experiences, building relationships, and seeking opportunities can contribute to a rewarding high school experience. We are proud of all she has accomplished and look forward to seeing how she continues to grow and make the most of her time at Wisco.
