Viking Christian Leaders: Unity

Congratulations to Sophia Berg ('27) and Josiah Iwinski ('28) who were selected as Viking Christian Leaders for the month of September under “The Wisco Way Word": Unity. We thank God for the way Sophia and Josiah have modeled servant leadership at school and in the community. Any student or staff member may nominate a student for the Viking Christian Leaders Award which is presented each month to one young man and one young woman.
Sophia is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended grade school at St. Philips in Milwaukee and is a member of St. John’s Mukwonago.

Sophia was nominated for the Viking Christian Leader award for her notable consideration towards others, servant mindset, exemplary character, and her leadership. Sophia strives to befriend everyone she meets and has taken actual steps in better connecting with different groups of students. She is easy to talk to and genuinely cares about people and bringing them together. Sophia also demonstrates a positive attitude and leadership on the track team.

Currently a senior at Wisco, Sophia has participated in track, dance, choir, and musicals. She is also a member of WWW, the Global Leadership Team and an American Mentor, and part of the Black History program.
Sophia has served at her church by singing for worship services.

In her spare time, Sophia enjoys cooking, art, working out, and spending time with family.

After graduation from Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Sophia plans to attend WLC to be a registered dietician, with a minor in art.

Sophia describes Unity like this: Christian Unity means going out of your way to make everyone feel included instead of taking the easy way out. Acknowledging everyone’s differences respectfully and not letting them interfere with how you treat them. It is also remembering that everyone is a child of God and we should treat them accordingly.

Josiah is from West Allis, Wisconsin. He attended grade school at The Montessori School of Waukesha and is a member of The Church in Wisconsin in Muskego.

Josiah was nominated for the Viking Christian Leader award for his servant mindset, notable consideration towards others, outstanding attitude/disposition, and exemplary character. Josiah includes people in every situation and makes everyone feel like they matter. He is always willing to listen if you want to talk and gives good advice. He is cheerful, kind, helpful, and trustworthy.

Currently a junior at Wisco, Josiah has participated in track, golf, wrestling, choir, strings ensemble, and One Accord. He is also involved in WWW, NHS, VCLA, Student Council, American Mentors, Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Page Turners, Drama Club, fall play, math track, and Plautz ViTech.
Josiah serves at his church by helping in the nursery and running sound.

In his spare time, Josiah enjoys running, reading, playing tennis, singing and playing the piano, eating food, and socializing.

After graduation from Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Josiah plans to attend Purdue University to become an anesthesiologist.

Josiah characterizes Unity in Christian leadership like this: Unity to me means bringing people together in love despite our differences, to create something greater than we could on our own.
